Indian Tea

Tea originated in China. Ancient tea containers have been found that were molded somewhere around 200 BC. The tea emerged as a national drink in China. After Japan, the tea was adopting in western parts of Europe. It became a substantially traded commodity. British started to produce tea on the commercial basis by floating East India Company. The company was launched to check the monopoly of China on tea. Due to the East India Company, India emerged as the top producer of tea for a century approximately. Before the British expanded their empire in India, tea was treated as medicine.

India is a major tea producing country in the world. Indian tea has various types and is classified in many ways depending manufacturing process, convention, technique and market available form. India has a premier position in the world of tea and is next to China only in both area under tea and production of tea, and also the fourth largest country in export of tea in the world. Out of the various types of tea produced in the world, Assam and India as a whole produces most of the major types of tea. Assam tea is synonymous to the best quality Indian tea in the world and the full bodied, strong liquor of Assam tea is unique in the world. Assam has a tradition in tea drinking since time immemorial and the present generation of small tea growers are carrying the legacy further with production of fine organic handmade teas.

The tea industry did not end when the British left India. In fact, the tea market in India has been growing ever since. Today, there are as many as 43,293 tea gardens across the whole of Assam, 62,213 tea gardens in the Nilgiris and only 85 tea gardens in Darjeeling. In order to ensure the supply of genuine Darjeeling, Assam, and Nilgiri tea, a compulsory system of certifying the authenticity of these teas was incorporated into the Tea Act of 1953. The words ‘Darjeeling’, ‘Darjeeling logo’, ‘Assam logo’ and ‘Nilgiri logo’ are registered under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act of 1999.
